What Does House Painting Include?
House painting can mean the inside, the outside or both. Each covers different surfaces, and your quote should say which.
Interior repaint
A full interior repaint covers every room from top floor to ground floor. Ryan paints ceilings, walls and all the woodwork. That covers skirting boards, architraves, door frames and picture rails. The detail is on the interior painting page.
Exterior repaint
A full exterior repaint covers masonry, rendered walls, timber windows, fascias, soffits, gutters and the front door. It is done in sequence from the top of the building down. The detail is on the exterior painting page.
Inside and out together
Painting both sides in one project avoids setting up twice. It also keeps the finish consistent across the whole house. Ryan plans the order of work at the quotation stage, and the schedule is agreed before any brush touches a surface.
Older and period houses
Original plaster, cornicing and timber joinery need different preparation and paint from a modern build. Earlsdon was laid out from 1852, and Coventry City Council’s appraisal of the area describes many original sash and bay windows. Each one is a timber surface that needs preparing properly. What Kind of House Are You Painting?
Most Coventry houses are terraces or semis. At the 2021 Census, about 40% of homes were terraced and 30% semi-detached. Detached houses were under 12% and flats about 16%. The type of house often changes the job more than its size does.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Earlsdon was laid out in 1852, and the council describes many original sash and bay windows there. Each one is timber that needs preparing before it is painted. See the Earlsdon page for more on the area.
Interwar semis. The Cheylesmore estates were built from the 1930s, mostly as small semis and terraces. Whole-house repaints there often cover the inside and the outside together.
Watchmakers’ terraces. Chapelfields is a conservation area, and the council discourages painting or rendering external walls there. Ryan checks that before he quotes for outside work.
Post-war and newer houses. Rendered walls, pebbledash and modern joinery each want a different preparation. Ryan sees the surface at the visit and quotes for what is actually there.
Any house built before the 1960s may have old lead paint under later coats. Sound paint is best left undisturbed. If it is flaking, the health and safety guidance is to use wet methods, keep dust contained and avoid hot-air stripping. Ask Ryan how he would handle it at the visit.
Cost Drivers
What Drives the Cost of House Painting?
Two quotes for the same house can be thousands apart. Almost none of a painting price is paint. Materials are a small fraction of the total, and the rest is days on site. Anything that adds days adds money, and anything that saves days saves it.
Six factors move the price more than anything else.
The condition you start from. Sound, previously painted walls need filler in a few places. Old wallpaper, blown plaster, artex or gloss over gloss need stripping, filling, sanding and priming first. This is the biggest variable, and it does not show in a photograph.
How big the colour change is. A refresh in a similar shade covers in two coats. White over a strong colour, or the reverse, often needs three. That is a third more painting on every wall in the house.
Which surfaces are included. Walls only is one job, and walls plus ceilings is meaningfully more. Adding doors, architraves, skirting and radiators roughly doubles the labour. Woodwork is brush work, and brush work is slow.
Whether the house is empty. An empty house is painted stage by stage, straight through. An occupied house goes room by room, with furniture moved, sheeted and moved back each time.
Height and access. A stairwell needs staging or a platform. A Victorian ceiling height adds real time to every wall in the house.
Wallpaper. Hanging paper is a separate skill, charged separately. Stripping old paper is one of the few jobs that can take longer than expected.
None of these six can be judged from outside the house.

Whether it is worth paying a house painter depends almost entirely on the size of the job. Three situations cover most houses.

This is the job most people can do themselves. There are no ceilings or woodwork to deal with, and the skill needed is patience, not technique. Paying someone here buys time you already had.
Whole house
A whole house, start to finish
This is the job most people underestimate. Days of filling, sanding and caulking come first, and ceilings and stairwells need staging to reach safely. Woodwork shows every brush mark from the doorway. That volume of preparation is where self-managed projects stall.
Shared job
Split the job where skill matters
A decorator takes the ceilings, the stairwell and the woodwork. You take the straightforward bedroom walls. It is a genuine middle option, so ask about it.
Timescale
How Long Does It Take to Paint a House?
Need to know how long the house will be out of action? There is no single answer, and be wary of anyone who gives one without seeing the house. As a rough guide, a typical three-bed interior repaint usually takes one to two weeks. A larger house, or a job that covers the inside and the outside, can run to two to three weeks or more.
What moves it either way:
- Preparation. Stripping, filling and sanding take longer than painting, and old wallpaper or failed paint adds to it.
- Drying and recoat times. Each coat has to dry before the next, and the wait is longer in cold or damp weather.
- Weather. Exterior work waits on dry days, so a wet spell pushes the outside back.
- Access. Stairwells, high ceilings and outside walls need staging, which takes time to set up.
- Living in the house. Working room by room around furniture takes longer than an empty house.
- Extra trades. A flooring delivery or a room that still needs clearing spreads the work across more of the diary.

Order of Work
What Order Is a House Painted In?
Wondering what happens first once the work starts? A whole house is painted by stage, not room by room. That means one set-up and one clean-down instead of eight. Ryan agrees the order at the quotation stage.

Preparation
Filling, caulking, sanding and stain blocking are done in every room before any finish coat goes on. Interior preparation runs first while the exterior dries from any cleaning or repair.

Exterior
Masonry, woodwork and metalwork are painted from the top down, around the weather forecast. Two finish coats are standard.

Ceilings, then walls
Ceilings go first, working from the top of the house down. Walls follow with two coats, or three where the colour change needs it.

Woodwork
Doors, architraves, skirting and radiators are done after the walls.

Hall, stairs and landing
These go last, because everything passes through them.

Final check and walkthrough
Ryan checks the whole house, does any touch-ups and walks through the finished work with you.

What Should a House Painting Quote Include?
Comparing two quotes for the same house? What each one covers matters more than the figure at the bottom. One may have priced bare walls and left the woodwork out. Another may have allowed for stripping wallpaper that the first assumed you would handle.
