We were looking at painting our house and found Ryan, who gave us a competitive quote and did fantastic job. Great work ethic and time management was good too. Would highly recommend his service. He also managed all the clear out all the furniture and put them back in order.

Highly recommend these decorators. Ryan decorated whole house which the tenant had left in an awful state of repair including vintage denim colour in hallway and halfway up the stairs and landing presumably just to where she could reach. The place is now like a new house. I am immensely grateful for his expertise and dedication regarding his work. Definitely recommend.

How It Works

How Godiva Decorators Works

Godiva Decorators works with a local decorator based in Coventry. When you call, you speak to Ryan, and you arrange the quote and the work with him.

1

Call and speak to Ryan

He is the decorator who does the work, not a call centre.

2

Tell him about the door

Say what it is made of if you know, how big it is and what is wrong with it.

3

He visits and quotes in writing

The quote sets out the preparation and the coats before anything is booked.

4

You agree the work directly

You agree the day and the colour with Ryan, and the door is checked before he leaves.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Godiva Decorators

Preparation before paint

Loose paint comes off, rust is treated and the primer suits the door material, so the finish has something sound to grip.

A price you can compare

The door, the preparation and the coats are listed before a price is given.

Cover on every job

Ryan is fully insured, with public liability cover on every job. Ask for proof when you get your quote.

Honest about the door

If painting is not the right route for your door, Ryan says so at the visit.

Door Types

Which Garage Doors Can Be Painted?

Preparation and primer change with the door material, so a quote starts with what your door is made of.

Painting a Timber Garage Door

Moisture swells and splits timber at chips and bare patches, and it can lead to rot. Ryan strips loose paint, primes the bare wood and paints it with a flexible exterior finish. Where the door is still sound, repainting can cost less than replacing it.

Painting a Metal or Steel Garage Door

Rust starts at scratches and chips and spreads under the paint if it is left. Ryan treats it with a rust converter, primes the metal and finishes it in gloss or satin.

Painting a GRP or Composite Garage Door

GRP needs a specialist adhesion primer before the topcoat. Paint put straight on the surface may not grip, so the primer step matters.

Can You Paint a uPVC Garage Door?

Yes. A plastic-bonding primer system works where the door is in good structural condition. Ryan tells you at the visit whether painting suits your door. A sprayed factory finish on uPVC is usually a specialist trade, so if that is what you want, a spray firm is the better fit.

Can You Paint a Roller Garage Door?

Yes. A roller door is a set of metal slats on a track. Ryan cleans it, treats any rust and paints it with brush and roller, keeping paint out of the tracks so the door still runs freely.

Cost Drivers

What Drives the Cost of Painting a Garage Door?

Two garage doors on the same street can be priced very differently. The paint is only part of it. Preparation and time on site usually matter more.

Six things move the price most.

The condition you start from. A sound, previously painted door needs a clean and a light key. Flaking paint, rust and stained panels need stripping, treating and more preparation. This is the biggest variable.

The size of the door. A double or wide door has more surface than a single up-and-over.

The material. Timber, steel and GRP each need their own preparation and primer, and uPVC needs a plastic-bonding system.

How big the colour change is. A similar shade covers easily. Dark over light, or the reverse, may need an extra coat.

Panels, frame and fittings. A door with deep raised panels has more edges to brush than a flat one. The handle, lock and seals need covering. Whether the frame and surround are painted too is agreed at the visit.

Access and weather. Ryan needs room to reach the whole door, and dry weather so the primer and coats can dry.

The material and the condition matter most, and both are easiest to judge with the door in front of you.

Cost

How Much Does It Cost to Paint a Garage Door?

Every one of those factors changes with the door, and the condition cannot be judged from a description. A price given before anyone has seen the door is a guess.

That is why Godiva Decorators prices garage door painting in Coventry from a visit rather than a rate card. Ryan looks at the door, checks the material and the condition, and prices the door he is standing in front of.

The quote is free, and it is put in writing before any work is booked in.

Spray or Paint

Is It Better to Spray or Paint a Garage Door?

Both can give a good result. The difference is the method, so it helps to know which one you are asking for.

Ryan paints garage doors by brush and roller. Small areas can be sprayed where that helps, but a full sprayed, factory-style finish is a specialist job, and a spray firm is the right call if that is what you want.

Is a Roller or a Brush Better for a Garage Door?

Neither works well on its own. A roller covers the flat areas in even coats. A brush reaches the edges, the mouldings around raised panels and the joints a roller cannot get into. Ryan uses both on the same door.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose spraying if a factory-style finish matters most to you. Choose brush and roller if you want a decorator who prepares the door and paints it where it hangs. Either way, ask what the preparation involves, because the finish is only as good as the surface under it.

Order of Work

What Order Is a Garage Door Painted In?

Wondering what happens once the work starts? Ryan follows the same order on every door, and the door material sets the details.

1

Assessment

Ryan checks the material, the paint condition and any rust or damage. That check sets the preparation and the quote.

2

Preparation

Loose paint is removed, rust is treated and the surface is cleaned and abraded so the primer can grip. The handle, lock and seals are covered.

3

Priming

The primer that suits the door material goes on and is left to dry fully.

4

Finish coats

Two finish coats go on, with time between them to dry. Dry weather matters, so the day is set around the forecast.

5

Final check

Ryan checks every edge, panel and joint and does any touch-ups before he leaves.

Coventry Homes

Garage Door Painting on Coventry Semis and Estates

The door you have depends on the house it belongs to. Two Coventry areas show the range.

Row of three matching garage doors painted dark green behind brick houses, Coventry

Post-war semis in Canley. Canley was built up from the 1940s to the 1960s with semis and terraces. Where one has a steel up-and-over door, the weak spot is usually the bottom edge, where chipped paint lets water in and rust starts. See the Canley page for more on the area.

1930s semis in Cheylesmore. The Cheylesmore estates were built from the 1930s, mostly as small semis and terraces. On a house that age, Ryan checks how well any earlier coats are holding before he quotes, because new paint is only as sound as what is under it.

Matching the front of the house. A freshly painted front with a faded garage door looks unfinished. Ryan can plan the garage door together with your front door, and you can give him a RAL or BS colour code to match the house.

Your Quote

What Should a Garage Door Painting Quote Include?

Comparing two quotes for the same door? What each one covers matters more than the figure at the bottom. One may include treating the rust and priming. Another may go straight to the finish coats.

A quote from Godiva Decorators lists the door and the preparation first. It names the primer, the number of coats and the colour before a price appears. All of it should be in writing before anything is agreed.

Normally included:

  • The door material and condition as Ryan found them
  • The preparation, described in detail
  • The primer for the door material
  • The number of finish coats and the colour
  • Covering the handle, lock and seals
  • Clearing up at the end

Normally quoted separately:

  • Repairs to rotten timber or a damaged door
  • The frame or surround, unless it is agreed at the visit
  • Repairs to the springs, hinges or opening mechanism
  • Other doors or exterior surfaces on the same visit

Usually yours to sort:

  • Moving cars, bikes and stored items away from the door
  • Clear access to the whole door
  • Choosing the colour, ideally with a RAL or BS code
