Staircase Painters in Coventry

Godiva Decorators are staircase painters covering properties across Earlsdon, Styvechale, Kenilworth, and Royal Leamington Spa.
- Balusters and spindles with correct preparation and finish
- Handrail and newel post painting or staining
- Stair risers and treads with high-traffic durable coatings
- Understairs area preparation and painting
- Victorian and Edwardian timber staircases
Earlsdon Victorian terraces have timber staircases with original spindles and newel posts. Softwood treads with multiple layers of varnish or paint require sanding back before any new coat is applied. Adhesion fails on the high-contact tread surface within months if the old build-up is not removed first. We always strip back before we start.

Staircase Painting Services
We paint all parts of the staircase with the right product for each surface.
Balusters and Spindles
Spindles are the most time-consuming part of any staircase paint project. Each spindle has four faces and two ends. Getting full, even coverage on all faces requires working from multiple angles.
We paint each spindle individually. Drips are checked and removed before the paint cures.
Handrail and Newel Post
The handrail and newel post are the highest-contact surfaces on the staircase. A durable, hard-wearing finish is essential. Gloss or satin paints with a hard alkyd formulation hold better than standard emulsion.
Hardwood handrails in Kenilworth period properties can be stained and varnished rather than painted.
Stair Risers and Treads
Treads are the horizontal surfaces you walk on. Risers are the vertical faces. The correct coating for a tread is a hard floor paint or durable floor enamel, not standard woodwork paint.
Floor paint on treads holds the foot traffic. Standard woodwork paint chips and scuffs within months.
Victorian and Edwardian Staircases
Original Victorian and Edwardian timber staircases in Earlsdon and Styvechale have accumulated decades of paint and varnish. Multiple incompatible layers cause adhesion failure.
We assess the staircase at the site visit. Where stripping is needed, we strip back to bare timber before priming.
Understairs Area
The understairs cupboard or open understairs area is often neglected in a staircase repaint. We include understairs walls and ceiling in the scope where agreed.
Where the understairs is used as storage, we work around existing shelving or advise on clearing the area.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Assessment
We visit the staircase and assess all surfaces. Old paint condition, varnish build-up, and spindle surfaces are all checked.
2. Preparation
Old paint is sanded back to a firm key. Where stripping is needed, treads and spindles are stripped to bare timber.
3. Priming
A wood primer suited to the surface condition is applied. New bare timber gets a sealing primer.
4. Spindle and Detail Work
Each spindle is painted individually. The handrail and newel post are done separately with appropriate coatings.
5. Final Inspection
We inspect the full staircase for drips, uneven coverage, and missed areas. You confirm the finished work before we leave.

Staircase Painting Costs in Coventry
Prices below are estimates only. Every staircase is different.

What Drives the Price
Spindle count, preparation required, and paint system all affect the cost. A standard straight staircase with fourteen spindles costs considerably less than a period staircase with forty spindles.
Earlsdon Victorian terrace staircases with multiple old layers of varnish and paint need stripping before any new coat.
Typical Ranges
Staircase repaint with timber treads and original spindles in an Earlsdon Victorian terrace: £620 to £980. Standard staircase in a Finham post-war semi: £380 to £580.
Period quarter-turn staircase in a Kenilworth detached with large spindle count and full strip: £850 to £1,300.
